Olympic flame moved
Olympic flame moved,The huge London Olympic cauldron has been moved to its final place for the rest of the Games.
It now stands at the edge of the athletics track where the Olympic Bell was during the opening ceremony.
The spectacular 28ft structure was extinguished last night and the flame was secured in a special miner’s lantern overnight while it was moved.
This morning, 82-year-old Austin Playfoot relit the cauldron, which is made up of 204 steel pipes and copper petals inscribed with the name of each competing nation.
Mr Playfoot, from Elstead, Surrey, who was lifted by a cherry picker to perform his task, was chosen because he was a torchbearer at both this year’s Olympic ceremony and at the 1948 London Games.
He said afterwards: “It was an honour. It brought me to tears.”
Some fans have complained that the cauldron will only be visible to those with tickets to the stadium.
But Lord Coe, London 2012 chairman, defended the decision saying it was “not created to be a tourist attraction”.
