Mystery Of Mayan Collapse

Mystery Of Mayan Collapse, What was behind the mysterious Mayan collapse? According to an August 22 Yahoo News report, the civilization may contributed to its own collapse. For six centuries the Mayans thrived throughout southern Mexico and northern Central America. Then, suddenly, they collapsed. Recent studies found that the people themselves helped with the collapse of their civilization, which is strange.

How did they contribute? They cut down the jungle canopy during a drought to make way for new cities. Lead author Benjamin Cook said,

“We’re not saying deforestation explains the entire drought, but it does explain a substantial portion of the overall drying that is thought to have occurred.”

Ultimately, the human interaction with the environment led to the collapse of the Mayan situation. The interesting thing about this most recent research is that it causes you to wonder what modern day humans are doing to cause their own society’s collapse. It seems like it could be a real problem.

These studies also make you ask, could the Mayan’s have changed their fate? Then, it makes you ask if modern societies can change their fate as well?
