Meth Disguised As Snickers Bars, Authorities announced Monday that they had seized several pounds of methamphetamines disguised as Snickers bars in luggage at Los Angeles International Airport. The luggage belonged to Rogelio Mauricio Harris, 34, who was bound for Tokyo. He was taken into custody as he was preparing to board his plane. Harris reportedly told a customs agent that he packed everything in his luggage himself.
“Upon closer inspection, officers discovered the 45 individually wrapped, full-sized ‘candy bars’ contained a white substance that was subsequently determined to be methamphetamine,” read a Department of Homeland Security statement.
Harris appeared in court Monday to face drug-smuggling charges.
The drugs were expected to sell as high as $250,000 in Japan, according to authorities.
“We are very disappointed by this unfortunate use of one of our brands,” said Mars, Inc., which manufactures Snickers.
If convicted, Harris could face 10 years to life in prison.
The case will be prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in California’s Central District.
