A deadly, drug-resistant superbug outbreak that began last summer at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center claimed its seventh victim Sept. 7, when a seriously ill boy from Minnesota succumbed to a bloodstream infection, officials said Friday.
The boy was the 19th patient at the research hospital to contract an antibiotic-resistant strain of the bacterium Klebsiella pneumoniae that arrived in August 2011 with a New York woman who needed a lung transplant. But his case marked the first new infection of this superbug at NIH since January — a worrisome signal that the bug persists inside the huge brick-and-glass federal facility in Bethesda.
“It’s heartbreaking,” said John Gallin, the physician-researcher who directs the clinical center. “What happened this summer was a very unfortunate case. All of these cases are hugely sad cases.”

Too fat for execution?
Too fat for execution?Convicted Ohio killer Ronald Post wants a delay of execution because, he says, his scar tissue and 480 pounds of body mass would make lethal injection far too painful, the AP reports. "There is a substantial risk that any attempt to execute him will result in serious physical and psychological pain to him, as well as an execution involving a torturous and lingering death," his lawyers said in a court filing. His lawyers even added that the 53-year-old is too big for an execution gurney.
Green Beret case
Green Beret case,One of the most sensational and infamous murder cases in modern U.S. history returned to a courtroom Monday as former Green Beret doctor Jeffrey MacDonald sought a new trial in the killing of his family.
MacDonald was back in court in Wilmington, North Carolina, as his lawyers argued new evidence should be heard by a jury.
"We feel like evidence is coming in the way we want it to. So we are very pleased at this point," MacDonald lawyer Gordon Widenhouse told CNN affilliate News 14 Carolina.
MacDonald is serving a life sentence in the 1970 slayings of his wife and two young daughters in their Fort Bragg home. The 68-year-old has long maintained that they were beaten and stabbed to death by a group of hippies who broke into their homes, chanting "kill the pigs" and "acid's groovy."

Mimi Turner, Northern and Shell's communications director, said: "We abhor the decision of the Irish Daily Star to publish these intrusive pictures of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, which we, like St James's Palace, believe to be a grotesque invasion of their privacy."
The editor of the Daily Star Sunday in Britain, Gareth Morgan, told Sky News: "It's absolutely disgusting. We're horrified here in the office and and as a company. I'm speaking for the Daily Star Sunday and for four other responsible titles in Northern and Shell. This has no merit as an editorial decision, no merit morally. It's frankly a horrible decision."

Gorilla Carries toddler
Gorilla Carries toddler,A "Gorilla carries toddler" video has gone viral on YouTube. While it was shot over two decades ago, the thought of a 300-pound gorilla carrying around a baby is unsettling. What's more, the child's father deliberately placed the child in the animal's enclosure, sparking a debate on safety. However, he may have proved critics wrong who believe the big apes are aggressive and a danger to man. If you're thinking this is "strange news," you're dead-on.

Refs seemed to struggle to maintain control like so many substitute teachers and one ref was pulled from the New Orleans Saints’ game because he is a Saints fan. From Ray Lewis and Joe Flacco to Tony Dungy to Mike Pereira to the NFL warning coaches about bullying refs, it’s clear that this situation is getting ugly.

Ford Edge Recall
Ford Edge Recall, Ford Motor Co. is recalling some of its 2012 Edge vehicles because of concerns that the fuel line could leak and potentially cause a fire.
The recall affects about 5,500 vehicles made between Sept. 2, 2010, and Oct. 31, 2011.The Edge is a midsized SUV, and the affected vehicles have 2-liter engines. The problem is caused by a part in the fuel line that could crack. If it did, the smell of gas would probably be noticeable, and fuel leaks might also appear. Those conditions could cause a fire under the hood.

Philip Seymour Hoffman and the Master
Philip Seymour Hoffman and the Master,Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Oscar-baiting performance in The Master, the new film directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Joaquin Phoenix, has already been met with a ravishing critical reception. Yet the film could become a commercial hit as well as a critical darling, if early ticket sales are anything to go by.
That’s because The Master absolutely flattened art-house records when it opened in just five theaters nationwide on Friday, September 14.
The Oscar contender reportedly grossed $242,127 from the handful of screenings – a figure that works out at $48,425 per screen. Those are some impressive single-night numbers for an art-house flick, and if the film has managed to maintain its momentum over Saturday and Sunday, it’s highly likely to break the opening weekend art-house record.

Mandy Patinkin's regret
Mandy Patinkin's regret,Mandy Patinkin, co-star of Showtime's Emmy Award-nominated psychological thriller "Homeland," has every reason to take a bow. Critics say he deserved his own nomination for his work as grizzled CIA agent Saul Berenson, opposite Claire Danes and Damian Lewis (both nominated for their performances). But despite his "Homeland" success, 59-year-old Patinkin can't say he's proud of every bullet point on his TV résumé.

Paul Ryan speech today
Paul Ryan speech today,For much of the night, it appeared that convention planners had deliberately designed a snooze-fest intended to make Paul Ryan's acceptance speech look better.
The painfully unfunny Tim Pawlenty, the achingly dull Rob Portman, and depressingly banal John Thune all emerged to remind us they wouldn't have been better vice-presidential picks than Ryan. John McCain took the stage to lament the wars he didn't get to start after losing the 2008 presidential election, fervently hoping Mitt Romney will make up for lost time. Republicans you have never heard of enjoyed their 15 minutes of fame, though it often seemed much longer.

Japan to end nuclear power
Japan to end nuclear power,A Cabinet panel on Friday called for Japan to phase out nuclear power over the next three decades in what would be a major shift of national energy policy prompted by the Fukushima meltdowns.
Reversing Japan's decades-long advocacy of nuclear power is popular with the public, though it faces opposition from powerful business interests. The new policy calls for greater reliance on renewable energy, more conservation and sustainable use of fossil fuels and would see Japan joining Germany in turning its back on nuclear energy.
The proposal requires endorsement by the entire Cabinet, which Japanese news reports say has already agreed to the changes.

Mountie salaries lag behind other police
Mountie salaries lag behind other police, RCMP salaries lag behind most of their provincial and municipal counterparts - and the national police force is also slipping when benefits and pension are weighed in.
An internal report from the RCMP Pay Council dated June 2012 that compares salaries for first class constables across the country found the RCMP ranks 53rd out of 82 Canadian police forces surveyed.
An RCMP constable's salary is $79,308 - behind the national median of $83,483 and trailing the top Canadian constable's salary of $87,880. The report also shows the RCMP has dropped to fourth spot, behind the Ontario Provincial Police, among Canada's nine biggest police forces when it comes to total compensation that includes pension, allowances and benefits.
Mounties are paid less than their counterparts in Moose Jaw, Sask., the Ontario cities of Guelph and Belleville, and most of Canada's big cities.
Because the RCMP is not unionized, the pay council recommends compensation based on the average of the top three police departments, and is ultimately established by the RCMP's employer, the Treasury Board of Canada.
RCMP spokesman Greg Cox said there are no signs the slipping compensation is having an impact on replenishing the ranks.

Federal Spending Cuts
Federal Spending Cuts, In a rare early morning weekend vote, the House approved an aggressive plan Saturday to eliminate dozens of federal programs and offices while slashing agency budgets by as much as 40 percent, drawing out more than $60 billion in deficit savings.
Setting up a showdown early next month with President Obama and Senate Democrats, House Republicans pushed the legislation through after a marathon debate capped off by an all-night session Friday that spilled into Saturday morning. During the bleary-eyed final roll call at 4:35 a.m., 235 Republicans were joined by no Democrats in support of dramatic spending reductions that they said were needed to address a soaring annual deficit of $1.6 trillion; 189 Democrats -- as well as three Republicans -- opposed it, accusing Republicans of writing the bill with a "double meat ax."
The three Republicans voting against the measure were Reps. Jeff Flake (Ariz.), Walter Jones (N.C.) and John Campbell (Calif.).
For Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio), it marked an early political victory as his newly empowered GOP troops lived up to a 2010 campaign pledge to trim spending levels to those before the 2008 financial crisis caused an unprecedented level of government spending and intervention into the private economy.
"It's democracy in action," Boehner said in an impromptu, triumphal press conference off the House floor just past 9 p.m. Friday.

Multiple Sclerosis pill,Sanofi SA has won U.S. approval for its multiple sclerosis (MS) pill Aubagio, one of the two treatments for the chronic disease that could return the French drugmaker to growth after several blockbuster drugs lost patent protection.
The drug is less effective than rival pills but has milder side effects and analysts say it could be popular among newly diagnosed patients. Around 35 to 40 percent of MS sufferers prefer to take no medication rather than face unwanted side effects.
Sanofi is also expected to highlight the convenience of a once-daily pill against injectable drugs that are widely prescribed as a first-line treatment for MS.

Middle East protests,The State Department has angrily denied claims that it had intelligence warning its consulate in Libya would be attacked 48 hours before extremists stormed the building and shot three staff members dead.

British newspaper The Independent had claimed that the State Department had credible information warning of attacks on embassies 48 hours before mobs stormed the outposts in Libya and Cairo.
However, a spokesman told Politico: 'This is absolutely wrong. We are not aware of any actionable intelligence indicating that an attack on the U.S. Mission in Benghazi was planned or imminent.'

An estimated 16 Taliban fighters were also killed in the assault, said Lt. Col. Stewart Upton, a spokesman at Camp Leatherneck, a U.S. Marine based adjacent to the air base, Camp Bastion.
Prince Harry, third in line to the British throne, is stationed at Camp Bastion on a four-month combat tour. There was no immediate word on his whereabouts at the time of the attack.
U.S. officials said the attack at the base in Afghanistan's Helmand province involved a range of insurgent weaponry, possibly including mortars, rockets or rocket-propelled grenades, as well as small arms fire.
Upton said two coalition service members had been killed but he did not specify their nationalities. He said coalition forces were assessing the extent of the damage and would provide more details later.

New York Soda Ban
New York Soda Ban, Say goodbye to venti Frappuccinos, gallon movie theater slurpees and big sodas.
The city's Board of Health approved Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s ban on large sugar-sweetened drinks at its monthly meeting Thursday morning. Nine members voted for it, and one abstained.
Under the plan, all restaurants, fast-food joints, delis, movie theaters, sports stadiums and even food carts will be barred from selling sugar-sweetened drinks in cups larger than 16 ounces.
The limits will not apply to drinks sold in grocery stores, diet sodas, drinks that are more than 70-percent fruit juice, or that contain alcohol.
Dairy drinks containing more than 50 percent milk will also be allowed thanks to their redeeming nutritional qualities — though that’s little solace for Frappuccino lovers since the Starbucks treats contain far less milk than that.
The plan, which requires no other authorization than the Board of Health's vote, has elicited outrage from many, including representatives of the beverage industry which launched an aggressive million-dollar lobbying campaign against the restrictions, accusing Bloomberg of running a Nanny State.

New Monkey Species
New Monkey Species, A new species of monkey with a distinctive blue rear end has been identified in Africa, researchers have said.
The species, known locally as the lesula, was discovered after a young female was seen kept captive at the home of a primary school director in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2007.
The young animal resembled an owl faced monkey (Cercopithecus hamlyni) but the colour of its rear end was different to that of any known species, the researchers writing in the journal PLoS ONE said.
In fact, they say, its blue rear end is unique.
'The blue perineum, buttocks and scrotum displayed by adult males are more extensive than genital patches in any other Cercopithecus', the researchers wrote.

The report, from Fox Business' Charlie Gasparino, said "owners of the Boston Red Sox are mulling a potential sale of the storied baseball franchise, and have even begun quietly shopping the team to potential buyers."
In an emailed response to SI.com's Tom Verducci that was also sent to other media members, Henry said, "Tom [Werner] and I speak 7 days a week. A sale of any kind is so far from out thinking that it hasn't even come up apart from the technical planning issues involving death or disability. This report is completely without foundation. Regarding unnamed sources -- any sale discussions that may have taken place were missing three key people -- Larry [Lucchino], Tom and me. The Sox and any of the other components of FSG are not for sale and will not be for the forseeable future."

She told the Charlotte Observer that his addiction to drugs and offenses for robbery - including her own truck - meant she was not interested and broke up with him for good 12 years ago.

Somalia new president
Somalia new president,Once the excitement, and perhaps surprise, of being elected president wears off, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud could be forgiven for feeling slightly ill at the prospect of governing Somalia.
After all, the country has for the past five years come top of the list of the world's failed states.
The fact that Mr Mohamud is a relative newcomer to politics - he only set up his Peace and Development Party in 2010 - is both a strength and a weakness.

The time period of the depression had to be nine months after the child was born.
Tropical Storm leslie
Tropical Storm leslie,Tropical Storm Leslie's stiff winds and heavy rains lashed Newfoundland as the storm made landfall Tuesday, knocking out power in several towns and forcing the cancellation of all flights at the island's main airport.
The potent storm touched down in Fortune, Newfoundland, at about 8:30 a.m. AST (7:30 a.m. EST, 1130 GMT) as it continued to barrel north-northeast at at about 40 mph (65 kph), the Canadian Hurricane Centre said.
Winds were still building, with the St. John's airport recording hurricane-force gusts of up to 81 mph (131 kph), while waves were reaching 10 yards (meters) at an offshore buoy. Several towns along eastern Newfoundland had already lost power and flights were cancelled before the hurricane made landfall Tuesday.
The Canadian Hurricane Centre predicted at least 12 hours of intense rain over the northeastern province's hilly terrain, which could generate rapid runoffs, said the agency's program supervisor Chris Fogarty. The center was warning of possible damage from toppled trees, flooded streets and downed power lines.

Whistleblower $104 million,The Internal Revenue Service has awarded an ex-banker $104 million for providing information about overseas tax cheats — the largest amount ever awarded by the agency, lawyers for the whistleblower announced Tuesday.
Former Swiss banker Bradley Birkenfeld is credited with exposing widespread tax evasion at Swiss bank UBSAG. Birkenfeld himself served roughly two and-a-half years in prison for a fraud conspiracy conviction related to the case, which resulted in a $780 million fine against the bank and an unprecedented agreement requiringUBS to turn over thousands of names of suspected American tax dodgers to the IRS.

Ovarian Cancer test
Ovarian Cancer test,The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force reviewed studies that have been conducted since its earlier recommendation and found that ovarian cancer screening using transvaginal ultrasound and a blood test called CA-125 doesn’t reduce the number of deaths from the disease, according to the recommendation published yesterday in the Annals of Internal Medicine. In particular, a U.S. study last year of 78,216 women found that those who were screened didn’t have a lower death rate from the cancer than women who weren’t tested.
“This is very high-quality evidence, it very strongly supports not screening,” said Virginia Moyer, chairwoman of the task force and a pediatrician at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. “There is a risk of serious harm associated with screening.”
The group in May advised against using a common screening test for prostate cancer, called prostate specific antigen. The risk of excessive treatment from false positive results with the PSA test isn’t worth the risk and the screening shouldn’t be used to diagnose the disease, the group said. In November 2009, the advisory group of doctors said annual mammograms for women in their 40s have more risks than benefits, and women at average risk of breast cancer should use screening every two years once they turn 50.

Candy Corn Oreos
Candy Corn Oreos,The internet is abuzz today with a photo of Candy Corn Oreos making the rounds. The Oreo camp has confirmed to HuffPost Food that they are indeed real and they will be available exclusively at Target starting next week for a suggested retail price of $3.59.
The cookie is a limited edition (Halloween season, clearly) and several blogs are racing to try them (stay tuned, we've got people ON IT as well. Our friends at Foodbeast snagged some -- see below). From the looks of the product shot below, the cream center is half orange and half yellow. There's a strange amount of excitement going on about these, but we wonder if it is sheer amazement or sheer horror. If they are anything as good as Birthday Cake Oreos, we're in.
Foodbeast managed to get their hands on a package at a local Target and found that the Oreos tasted pretty much like frosting:

National video games day
National video games day,Chocolate Milkshake Day
Chocolate milkshakes bring back memories of childhood, before we were all watching our waistlines and avoiding empty calories. But today we get a reprieve from such adult worries because it's "Chocolate Milkshake Day!"
Although milkshakes are part of our childhood, they actually had adult origins. The first milkshakes were a kind of alcoholic eggnog, first appearing in print around 1885. In addition to tasting great, they were said to have also served medicinal purposes.
By 1900 they were enjoyed purely for refreshment, and without the alcohol, but it wasn't until 1922 that they made their giant leap into widespread popularity. That's when Ivar "Pop" Coulson -- a Walgreens employee -- added two scoops of ice cream to a regular malted milk drink. The idea spread like wildfire.

Tony Danza teacher
Tony Danza teacher
Tony Danza teacher,A couple of years ago, Tony Danza, best known as an actor for his work on the classic television
shows Who’s the Boss? and Taxi, was eager to try his hand at something far outside his comfort zone. Despite once being a lackluster student himself, Danza had always dreamed of being a teacher and was even a History Education major in college. In 2009, he jumped at an opportunity to teach 10th grade English for a year at an inner-city Philadelphia high school.
“It wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be,” Danza tells TakePart, of his teaching experience (which was also captured on A&E’s reality show Teach: Tony Danza). “It was emotionally grueling—and that was a shock. The kids need to know you like them before they are willing to work for you.”
In his new book, I’d Like to Apologize to Every Teacher I Ever Had: My Year as a Rookie Teacher at Northeast High, he explains how—after many false starts—he finally gained his students’ trust. He worked overtime in volunteer coaching activities and field trips, and he made the effort to get to know his students and their particular psychological issues. He also gained an appreciation for teachers that he says he could never have comprehended before walking in their shoes: “It’s just a hard load,” he says of the profession.

Taylor Swift Cape Cod Home
Taylor Swift Cape Cod Home,Taylor Swift Buys Home Near the Kennedys on Cape Cod, After getting a taste of the Kennedy lifestyle this summer, Taylor Swift apparently feels she could get used to it.
The Nashville-based singer, 22, who is dating Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s son Conor, 18, has bought a house in Hyannis Port, Mass., across the street from Conor's grandmother Ethel, according to several reports.
A realtor in Hyannis, Mass., confirmed the purchase to PEOPLE, saying Swift bought the property last week.
"It's in a beautiful location and right across the street from Conor and the Kennedys," the realtor says. "It's a beautiful home. She got a nice home, paid fair price. The house was on the market for two to four years."
The realtor said the property – said to be a 13-room home overlooking Nantucket Sound with seven bedrooms and five bathrooms – was originally listed for $14 million but was "way overpriced." Local reports say Swift scooped it up for $4.9 million.
Swift, who is said to be "swept off her feet" by Conor, has many admirers in the Kennedy clan, with Ethel's daughter Rory calling her "a great friend of all of ours."

Macaulay Culkin heroin
Macaulay Culkin heroin, Macaulay Culkin is no heroin addict, according to his rep, no matter how loud a tabloid headline screams that rumor.
A report that Culkin is addicted to heroin and more "is not only categorically without merit, but it is also impossibly and ridiculously fictitious," his publicist told various outlets Wednesday, reacting to a National Enquirer cover story that loudly predicts the"Home Alone" actor's death within six months.
"We beseech the responsible media to consider the source and its reputation and to please not perpetuate this destructive and insulting story by pursuing it any further."
The Enquirer is standing by its account, which describes the former child star, 31, as being in a "downward spiral" since splitting with Mila Kunis in early 2011 and blowing thousands a month on various drugs, including oxycodone, Percocet and Vicodin.
"We believe that the former child star should be doing everything he can to get the treatment he so desperately needs," the mag said in a dramatic statement Thursday, referring to its "accurate and detailed account."
"[W]e are ready to offer him the opportunity to take a blood test administered by an independent medical lab," said the mag, which incidentally would get a pretty nice story if such a test were to be conducted.

Pot Testicular cancer
Pot Testicular cancer,Smoking marijuana may increase young men's risk of testicular cancer, a new study suggests.
In the study, marijuana users were about twice as likely to be diagnosed with testicular cancer compared to those who had never used marijuana. The link was particularly strong for the types of testicular cancer that tend to have a worse prognosis, the researchers said.
The study only found an association, and does not show marijuana use causes testicular cancer. However, the work is the third study to find such a link, and the results warrant investigation into whether compounds in marijuana smoke may be carcinogenic to the testes, the researchers said.

What attracts men
What attracts men
What attracts men,If you are out there looking for a guy, the first thing you have to know is what attracts men to women. If you're sending all the wrong signals, you will be scaring them all off and will have a shot of landing a man. You have to make sure your body language and actions are giving off the right signals to the right guy.
Look at his eyes - One of the first things that men notice about women is their eyes. This is usually the first point of contact as no man in his right mind is going to walk up to a woman that isn't looking him in his face. A woman can say so much with her eyes that they are a clear window for a man to look directly into them and see what they're all about.
